Maison de Potier’s became  notable in the 15th century when with their enormous wealth and influence they managed to obtain a place in the parliment of Bordeaux and become ennobled as “noblesse de cloche”.

The family estate is the comparatively modern Château Pichon in the Bordeaux region of France, which has been the location of a vinyard, since the 17th century.

The members of the house are also partial to a drink, being known for the ‘gaiety’ of their lifestyle. They are known for taking party to excesss, organizing lavish social events themselves and also taking part to every occasion for merryment. Wherever there is a Potier, there is a scandal. This lifestyle also includes gambling and the family with their distant bourgeoisie relatives are behind the Casino Oie d’Or, where people can play Biri, Pharoan, dice and other such games. An innovation for their more refined clientele is a variation on Biri called “Roulette”.

The family MOTTO is (ironically enough) “Contentement passe richesseContentment is preferable to riches

Maison d’Amboise (fictional) is a very old family from Amboise in the Loire valley. The family estate is the Chateau d’Amboise.

The surviving branch of the family is descended from Jacques d’Amboise, doctor of Henry IV. In any case, those family members who are not in line to inherit family lands usually pursue a university education and then some professional career, if not medicine then law or politics. The family’s view of itself is that they are enlightened, renaissance men and women and this, combined with birth and wealth makes them see themselves as natural members of the ruling class. As such, they seek to distance themselves as much as possible from the hoi-polloi, in dress, manners and spending habits.

The Amboise family is very ambitious and scheming to secure positions of power and influence for themselves and their relatives is a regular feature of family gatherings. In general, they are courtly, witty and debonaire but there is a driven, ruthless, vengeful side seen only by those who make enemies of them by thwarting their ambitions. Other families should beware the current prominent Amboise members at court, for they are privy to a lot of private information, some of which is potentially scandalous – if you are a drunk or have syphilis, they know about it, and this knowledge is quite ruthlessly put to use by the other family members, if they need to persuade someone to influence a decision in their favour.

The family’s learned, refined and magnanimous self-image makes them frequent patrons of the arts and sciences. Book readings, piano recitals and chamber music, and scientific demonstrations are hosted by the Amboise family on a regular basis. The d’Amboise women tend to enjoy creative and craft pursuits such as painting, embroidery, drawing and often meet up on afternoons to sew or paint together while sharing the latest gossip. Those that are unmarried sometimes act as tutors to the children of other noble families.

The family MOTTO is “Suivez la raison” which means “Follow reason”

Maison de Hauteclocque (fictional) is a French noble family established during the Middle Ages by the lords of the fief of Hautecloque. Haulte clocque in middle French means “High Bell”, this explains the familial motto: “On entend loing sonner haulte clocque” (One can hear the high bell ring from far away). The family served the King in the crusades and most recently the battle of Fourtenoy in 1745.

This family considers itself to be highly cultured. They are well favoured at court because of their erudition and sense for art. Hauteclocque family have amassed a great fortune through import of luxury goods such as gold and tobacco for aristocratic buyers. They have also had success in making favorable marriages and their skills as intermediaries are often sought after to arrange beneficial marriages for other noble families.

The family MOTTO is “On entend loing sonner haulte clocque” (One can hear the high bell ring from far away).

Maison d’Estrée

════════════════════════════════════════════════════

Maison d’Estrée is a very old family from the Loire valley. The family estate is the Château de la Bourdaisière, birthplace of Gabrielle d’Estrée, notable mistress of Henry IV. It was once named ‘the hutch of whores’ because of Gabrielle and her 6 sisters’ (nicknamed ‘the seven deadly sins’) role as courtesans. In spite of these sneering comments, the relationship between the King and Gabrielle was quite devoted and she would have become queen, if she had not suddenly died of pre-eclampsia days before they were due to be married. Certainly the history of the estate does not bother the descendants of the house of Estrée who enjoy a good reputation around court. They are known for good conduct, good manners and good living.

The familiy owns several estates and plantations in the New World and Africa, together with a number of ships which bring the luxury goods to France such as chocolate,  spices and such exotic foodstuffs as can survive the long journey.

Their famed Menangerie in the grounds of their family estate Château de la Bourdaisière boasts all kinds of rare and exotic animals brought back to France from the four corners of the world. The latest curiosity is riding ostriches.

Maison de Vergy (fictional) is one of the oldest French noble families.

The family estate is sited close to the rocky spur near Beaune in Burgundy, which was the site of the reputedly impregnable medieval château de Vergy, razed in 1609 by Henry IV. The c.13 romance “La Châtelaine de Vergi” tells the story of an illicit love affair set within the castle.

From the earliest times, the family has had a strong connection to the church and a reputation for piety. The Bishopric of Autun has been held by the family for many generations and they were also the first historically attested owners of the Turin shroud. On the whole, the current generation continues the tradition of religiosity, with several members holding high offices within the church, beside the bishop of Autun. Other members are well known for charitable activities and patronage of poetry and similar creative endeavours. Less well known is that not all family members are so righteous, however: Certain members of the family have pursued dissolute lives, and certain among the bishops have lived double lives with secret mistresses and even illegitimate children. The more devout family members ususally respond to such scandalous behaviour by either acting to end it or making sure it doesn’t become publicly known: younger members might be sent to an abbey controlled by the family or to overseas posessions, mistresses induced to leave with bribes or threats, older members persuaded to retire to the estate at Vergy, far from temptation and, more importantly, Versailles.

Some members are known for the literary ambitions, who write (and support writers of) poety, novels, philosophical and religious tracts and all manner of discourse on society and politics. Many writers’ careers have been advanced by being asked to present their work at one of the Vergy family’s literary events.

Family motto “Dieu est ma roche – God is my rock”

The name of Maison de Noailles (historical) comes from the castle of Noailles in Ayen. The first member of this family to become famous was Antoine de Noailles (1504 – 1562). He was Admiral of France and ambassador to England. Members of the family held several titles. One of these titles, Duc de Noailles was created in 1663. Other younger males were often given the title of Comte de Ayen. The title of Prince de Poix was usually used by the heir to the Mouchy dukedom. Heirs to the Noailles dukedom were given the courtesy title of Duc de Ayen. The family produced four cardinals, several marshals of France and cadets. House of Noailles owns a large townhouse in Paris called the Hôtel de Noailles.

Maison de Gramont (historical) is an old French noble family. The name derives from the castle of Gramont situated in Lower Navarre. The Gramonts became prominent during the 2nd Duc – Antoine III de Gramont, who served as the Marshal of France under Louis XIV reign, and was a loyal supporter of the Richelieu. Men, who bore the name of Gramont, were most famous for their military careers, what since the 1st Duc has become a family tradition.

Until late 17th century there was no family motto but has since been Dei gratia sum id quod sum (“The grace of God I am what I am”).

The Gramont House was one of the longest line of nobles in France, and always maintain a distinct relationship with the Royal family, since they have root from the royal family themselves. It is not strange that every noble that seek frame and power tries their best to get on good terms with The Gramont house. As an example, Aglaé de Polignac, daughter of the favorite of Queen, was married to the head of Gramont house – Antoine Louis Marie de Gramont, to secure their bond with the royal family. Fortune can be stolen, and a certain moment of privilege can vanish in an instance, that is why the deep bond with the royal family of the Gramont family are greatly envious. Proud of being Noblesse Ancienne, and mostly calculative, they do everything to secure the power and privileges till the point of ruthlessness.

Duchesse de Gramont, Béatrice, has supported politics of Chief Minister of the King Louis XV, arranger of the marriage between Dauphin Louis Auguste and Austrian Archduchess – Maria Antonia, later queen of France – Marie Antoinette. According to this, family members are known as most loyal supporters of the Queen, having her favor from the times of Ministre de Choiseul (the biggest enemy of Madame du Barry at court during Louis XV reign).
